In this presentation I will discuss the enduring nature of women’s fiction and its ability to speak to women across classes and cultures. I will go on to describe my own experience of creating a body of fiction focused on the lives of older women. Through readings from my novels I will demonstrate the ways in which writing about women’s everyday lives validates their experience and their sensibilities, increases their visibility, and forges connections to and understandings of other others which transcend cultural borders.
From Memorialisation to Memory: Uncovering the hidden stories of women's lives.
In researching my recently released non-fiction book - In Love and War: Nursing Heroes – I returned to my childhood home in England to interview some World War II airman who were chronically facially disfigured by fire. In reconstructing their stories and the environment of the hospital in which they were treated, I also uncovered previously untold stories of the women who nursed them.
In this presentation I will discuss the combination of historical, academic and journalistic research and writing, together with the framework of memoir used in the book. And I will discuss the ways in which the memorialisation of war and heroism can smother different and often conflicting memories of the same events.
